A Thousand Echoes
Sound notes for birdsong on fine cables
Drawing for an idea… recorded sound waveforms transformed into glinting metal suspended from trees. The slightest breeze causing them to move and glint in the light of the woods.

Caro Williams, a London-based interdisciplinary artist, explores symbols, sound, language, and place through her installations and mixed media works. Drawing inspiration from literature, poetry, and the natural world, Caro's art invites viewers into a dreamlike space where meaning hovers ambiguously, just out of grasp.

Using diverse methodologies, Caro transforms everyday experiences—such as sounds, film clips, and lines from poems—into new materials through digital manipulation and sculptural installations. This process creates a poetic strangeness, where sounds morph into materials and text transcends paper, taking on three-dimensional forms. Her pieces often feature voice or site-recordings, capturing the universal essence of birdsong, which serves as both a visual and auditory experience, evoking ambiance and drawing attention to the almost imperceptible.

Caro's choice of materials is driven by the concepts she aims to convey. Delicate metal sheets are laser-cut into song notes and text, offering precision and a shimmering quality reminiscent of transient moments. Her installations, such as "Everyone was a Bird" at Wells Cathedral, use hand-cut irrigation tubing to attach song notes, sparking interpretations that merge the ethereal with the tangible.

Caro exhibits nationally and internationally, receiving recognition for her work, including awards and funding such as the Creative New Zealand WW1 Centenary Co-commissioning Fund (2016). She co-curated exhibitions like "Contemporary Art + Ritual" at the Crypt Gallery, London (2019), and her installations have been featured in prestigious venues such as Wells Art Contemporary, Wells Cathedral (2022), and the Royal Society of Sculptors Summer Exhibition, London (2022). Notably, Caro was awarded the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery – Museum at Large Public Art Commission, Exeter (2021), for her large-scale mixed media light and sound installation, "Lark Song," and her work "In the White Dawn" was shortlisted for the 2023 Aesthetica Art Prize.

Caro's work continues to captivate audiences, offering a sensory expedition through the transient and intangible aspects of human experience.

Caro is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors (MRSS) and ArtCan.
